Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Gold Bar, Washington. When in need of a hair or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis with centers nationwide, ready to conduct these tests. Typically, hair of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is required, and substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options can be detected.

Recently, the preference for drug assessments has shifted towards hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now often opt for these tests over traditional urine screenings. Hair follicle tests benefit organizations with strict anti-drug policies by offering a longer detection span, generally up to 90 days, and involve a supervised collection, making them hard to manipulate. For recent drug use, within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

As a robust method, hair testing has been acknowledged for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains a lengthy profile of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to around a 90-day window for tracking alcohol and other drugs. It is straightforward to collect, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches with about 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG and additional tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If no scalp hair is available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair imply scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry outside an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for judicial acceptability. Any samples turning up presumptively positive during Screening indeed require additional confirmation.

If Screening results in a presumptive positive, further hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods, such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing a challenging methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive screening results. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests enable detection of drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to tamper: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical data: Hair drug testing can illustrate a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair typically after 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variation: Aspects like hair coloration and personal differences in hair growth can impact metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
