Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair strand drug examinations in Granite Falls, Washington. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol screenings, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair assessments, with facilities across Nationwide cities capable of conducting hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is acceptable. Hair can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists increasingly prefer hair tests over standard urine exams. These tests are favored by employers upholding strict no-drug-use policies, as well as courts and probationary monitors, due to their extended detection timeline of up to 90 days, supervised collection, and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests still lead in accuracy for drug use detected within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair. When collected close to the scalp, it can offer a detection window for drugs and alcohol use extending up to approximately three months. Hair is easy to gather, a bit complex to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample dimension of 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for analysis. For EtG variants or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferred. It's advisable to measure the specimen on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't an option, a matching quantity of body hair can be used. By referring to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. In contrast, body hair comprises all other hair categories (like facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

In lab processing for a drug test result, the four main steps include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step of handling a sample in a lab’s system. This process involves confirming the proper seal and shipment of the sample, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing requisite data entries not supplied through an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening performs an initial swift drug abuse check. While it's an economical method to exclude drug usage in the majority of cases, a positive screen requires validation for legal credibility. Any samples believed to be positive in Screening need subsequent verification.

If Screening indicates a probable positive result, additional hair is taken from the starting sample and prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from hair at considerably lower doses than other methods (like urine or saliva), hence why hair drug testing is among the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any suspected positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests capture drug use detection for up to 90 days, while urine tests detect over shorter timeframes.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, making outcomes more dependable.
  • Offers historical insights: It gives an overview of drug consumption over time, not just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Not ideal for recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests carry a higher cost than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth variations can affect drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
