Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Grays River, Washington. Should a hair-based drug or alcohol test be needed, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in this area, with centers across cities nationwide ready to conduct hair testing. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required, either from the scalp or body, for testing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

In recent times, the usage of hair follicle drug tests in drug screening has become more prevalent. Many businesses, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. These tests are favored by organizations with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation for their extended detection window, which can span up to 90 days, ensures collection under supervision, and is nearly impossible to manipulate. Nevertheless, for detecting drugs used within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable form of testing.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now viewed as an essential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and other substances by securing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's best to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair varieties (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test processing includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s system, ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial swift assessment for drug abuse. Although it's cost-effective for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

When a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than those used in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed prior to confirmation as needed. The laboratory procedures from Accessioning through Confirmation are evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: It's challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing its accuracy.
  • Reflective historical data: It shows a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the underlying hair follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Grays River, WA
In Grays River, WA, hair follicle drug tests have a clear advantage over urine tests. They offer superior detection due to their longer detection window, allowing for substance use history analysis over months, rather than days.

Hair tests are notably difficult to cheat, offering enhanced reliability. Urine tests, while useful for recent use, don't cover the extensive history that hair tests can, giving employers more comprehensive insights into an individual’s habits.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
