In Greenwater, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle tests for both drugs and alcohol. Recognizing the need for specialized hair testing, our centers nationwide are equipped to perform these tests, requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair primarily from the head or body. This method effectively screens for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Hair follicle testing has become a more prevalent method of drug screening, especially favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. Preferred for its zero-tolerance efficacy, the test is widely used by parole boards, providing a reliable 90-day detection period under observation, making manipulation difficult. Yet, urine tests remain indispensable for use detection within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair maintains a lengthy record of alcohol and other substance use by encasing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When samples are taken from near the scalp, they can reveal up to a 3-month period of substance use for drugs and alcohol. Gathering hair is straightforward, moderately hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar to the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields roughly 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advocated. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precision in weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four fundamental stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary handling of a sample for the laboratory's database. This phase ensures the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry if the chain of custody system isn't fully digital.

Screening conducts an early assessment to detect abused substances. This method is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug presence in most samples, yet a positive indication requires validation to hold in legal proceedings. Presumptive positive results from Screening demand further confirmation.

If a sample registers positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, substances are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluids), thereby making hair drug testing a highly intricate method.

Verification of any positive screening outcome utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to examination under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug testing can identify drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine testing which detects over a shorter period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is notably challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers usage patterns: It facilitates identifying trends of substance use over months, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent usage: Drugs require around 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When looking at drug testing methods in Greenwater, WA, hair follicle testing offers clear advantages over urine tests. The detection window of hair tests is significantly broader, which means it can trace substances more accurately. This highlights its superiority in detecting past substance uses versus the more limited urine tests.

Hair follicle testing's nearly foolproof nature stands out against traditional urine tests. With its resistant attributes to tampering, it ensures reliable outcomes, making it the preferred choice for businesses keen on accuracy and reliability in Greenwater.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window for substance use in Greenwater, WA. Capable of reviewing drug use history up to 90 days, the test offers a comprehensive view of an individual's habits, offering deeper insights into their lifestyle choices than other testing methods.

The capability to detect a substance use pattern over 90 days offers employers a panoramic view of an individual's behavioral trends. This invaluable perspective aids in making informed decisions regarding employment and other critical matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
