Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug exams in Hamilton, Washington. For those needing drug or alcohol screenings, our centers nationwide, including all cities, offer excellent hair testing. Generally, testing requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or elsewhere on the body. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other needs.

The popularity of hair follicle testing in recent times has grown among employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists who prefer it over traditional urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance, courts, and probation officers often choose this method. Key advantages of hair testing include a detection window of up to 90 days, a monitored collection process, and its high resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extensive history of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage for up to roughly a 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample within a laboratory’s system. It involves confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a swift preliminary assessment for potentially abused drugs. Screening provides a cost-effective approach to excluding drug usage in most samples, but any positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that present a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the original specimen is taken for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, as necessary. The thorough laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a brief detection period.
  • Hard to falsify results: It is exceedingly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides usage history: It reveals a drug usage trend over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
