Accredited Drug Testing offers full-service hair follicle drug evaluations in Huntsville, Washington. For those seeking a hair or alcohol evaluation, we specialize in these tests and have facilities in various cities nationwide to provide a comprehensive service. It typically requires about 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. Our tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized based on your needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained traction in drug assessments, often replacing standard urine tests. Employers, legal authorities, and substance misuse specialists increasingly favor hair tests due to their longer detection window. They are ideal for reinforcing zero-tolerance policies and monitoring individuals on probation. Though not suited for recent use detection within 5 days, hair tests are indispensable for ensuring integrity and thoroughness.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. The fibers of a growing hair strand capture biomarkers, offering a prolonged record of substance use. A hair sample taken near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol use over a detection period spanning up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, offers resistance to tampering, and is convenient for shipping.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch portion containing about 200 hair strands, roughly the size of a #2 pencil, close to the scalp, yields 100mg— the optimal sample size for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and panels exceeding ten, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, body hair of a similar amount may be used. References to head hair imply scalp hair exclusively; in this context, body hair encompasses all other hair types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning represents the initial step of introducing a sample into a lab’s processing system, confirming the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening phase offers a preliminary check for drugs. While it efficiently rules out drug use in most cases, a positive initial screen must undergo confirmation to be legally valid. Presumptively positive samples from Screening require further confirmation.

For samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from the hair at much lower levels than other techniques, such as urine or oral fluid tests, highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug testing.

Any presumptive positive results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before Confirmation, all samples that tested positive initially undergo washing as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is conducted under stringent review according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Unlike urine tests, hair tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring precise outcomes.
  • Tracks historical usage: Displays a timeline of drug consumption rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent consumption: Drugs become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expensive: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Huntsville, WA, the benefits of hair follicle testing outweigh those of urine evaluations. Hair samples provide superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which capture shorter usage timeframes, hair assessments uncover long-term patterns, highlighting consistency and integrity. The process boasts better tamper-resistance, ensuring authenticity and fairness.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Huntsville, WA, extends the detection window to an impressive 90 days, unlike standard methods. This duration allows for an in-depth review of a subject's substance activities, providing employers with a transparent history of drug consumption. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
