Recognized for delivering comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in John Sam Lake, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized hair testing services. With testing centers nationwide, we conduct hair drug or alcohol tests. Generally, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for the test. Hair testing options include drug, alcohol/ETG, and other customized analyses.

Over the past years, drug testing methods increasingly feature hair follicle testing. This method has gained favor among employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals as an alternative to traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by organizations with zero-tolerance policies and by judicial systems. The main advantage is a longer detection window up to 90 days, with difficult-to-fool observed collections. However, urine tests remain preferable for recent drug use detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a decisive method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It maintains long-term traces of alcohol and other drug use by integrating biomarkers within the hair's fibers as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe extending up to approximately three months for both alcohol and other substances. Collection of hair is relatively straightforward, with limited potential for tampering, and is easy to transport.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches, comprising approximately 200 strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields around 100mg, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When referencing head hair, it pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial, or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing procedure encompasses four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into the laboratory's system. This phase includes ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data input not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is cost-effective for ruling out substance use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for court admissibility. Any samples showing a presumptive positive result in Screening require an additional confirmation.

Should a sample display a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the original sample for preparation in the Extraction stage. Here, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation, if needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests reveal substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug testing is notoriously difficult to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It uncovers a pattern of substance use over time, beyond recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent activity: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Results variation: Variables such as hair color and individual growth rates may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is on the hair strand itself, rather than the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

John Sam Lake, WA, discovers an array of benefits choosing hair follicle tests over traditional urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
