In Kapowsin, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. We are experts in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, with testing centers available in numerous cities across the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head is necessary, or body hair can be used if needed. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become an increasingly popular method in recent years. This type of testing is now a preferred choice for many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals compared to traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation programs favor hair tests due to their longer detection period—usually up to 90 days—and the difficulty associated with tampering. For drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline for alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. If collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to falsify, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a precise scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. The term 'head hair' refers specifically to scalp hair. 'Body hair' includes all other hair types (facial, axial, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step involves confirming the sample's seal and shipping integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for substance use. While Screening efficiently identifies drugs in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court acceptance. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, substances are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology.

Confirming any positive screen result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive are washed as needed before confirmation. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is extremely tough to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage history: It can showcase a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other screening methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is of the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
