Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle assessments for drug use in Ketron, Washington. Should you require drug or alcohol testing utilizing hair samples, our centers nationwide are prepared to assist. Typically, hair tests necessitate 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head, although body hair is an alternative. These tests can detect traces of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized as needed.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in recent years. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse counselors increasingly prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. Hair tests provide an extended detection window, covering up to 90 days, and involve an observed sample collection, making cheating difficult. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within its fibers. When cut near the scalp, hair samples can provide roughly a 3-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect hair, tough to tamper with it, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and those above 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and underarm hair).

Process Overview

The principal stages in lab processing for a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial integration into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for the presence of abusive substances. While Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug use in the majority of samples, results showing a positive indication require validation for legal acceptance. Any samples indicating a presumptive positive need further confirmation.

In cases of a presumptive positive during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, substances are drawn out from the hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is a complex method to carry out.

Validation of any positive result from screening is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing a presumptive positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceptionally challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It allows for the monitoring of drug use trends over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: There's a 5-7 day period before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the level of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: While often misnamed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
