Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lake Hills, Washington. If you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in this field, with testing centers located nationwide, including in each city. Generally, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for testing. Our hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific testing needs.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug tests has increased significantly. More employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists now favor them over traditional urine tests. These tests are ideal for employers with strict drug-free policies and for individuals on probation. Their key advantage is the extended detection period, often up to 90 days, with observation during sample collection, making them hard to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has been recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows, offering a comprehensive record of drug and alcohol history. When taken from near the scalp, it can reveal up to a 90-day period of drug and alcohol use. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for initial screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional screening, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to hair on the scalp, while "body hair" includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result procedure comprises four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system. This involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody.

The Screening phase involves a preliminary examination for drug abuse. Screening provides an economical means to eliminate the majority of drug-free samples, yet positive results necessitate confirmation to be valid for legal proceedings. Any samples that suggest a positive result in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If Screening results are tentatively positive, additional hair is gathered from the initial sample for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at levels significantly lower than in other tests (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive results from the Screening phase are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The whole laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under both the oversight of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specialty and the standards of ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a briefer timeframe.
  • Challenging to tamper: It is exceedingly difficult to falsify a hair drug test, leading to more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: Hair tests can show patterns of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Lake Hills, WA

Hair follicle testing delivers superior detection accuracy over traditional urine tests. The key advantage is the longer timeframe that hair samples can detect drug use, which can span months compared to the narrow window available with urine tests. This broad detection capability enables more comprehensive evaluations of an individual's substance habits in Lake Hills, WA.

Moreover, hair testing reduces the challenges associated with sample adulteration. Its reliability makes it favored by many employers who demand stringent adherence to drug-free policies, providing credible assurances more consistently than urine testing alternatives.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Lake Hills, WA

Hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days. This expansive timeframe allows employers in Lake Hills to gain a thorough insight into the applicant's or employee's substance use history. Unlike other methods with limited scopes, this test ensures that a broad spectrum of past drug use is visible to the hiring managers or supervisors.

Utilizing hair as a specimen opens broader horizons in substance monitoring, granting detailed profiles that are crucial in making informed employment decisions. Such extensive insight is rarely matched by other testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
