In Lake Shore, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing offers full hair follicle drug tests. Our specialization in hair testing is backed by our extensive network of testing centers available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed for testing. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized substances as per requirement.

The popularity of hair follicle drug testing has surged recently, overtaking the traditional urine test for many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. Favorable for those enforcing strict drug-free policies, hair tests provide an extended detection window up to 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are almost impossible to falsify. Nevertheless, for identifying recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair's unique capability to capture biomarkers within the hair strand fibers offers an extended view of alcohol and drug history. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol presence for roughly a three-month period. Its collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings over 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is preferred. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the hair. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, body hair in equivalent quantity can be collected. When we mention head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in laboratory drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of the sample into a laboratory setup. This step checks for proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary test for substances of abuse. While a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening need further confirmation.

In cases of presumptively positive Screening outcomes, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted at lower concentrations than other substances (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening as the most complex methodology.

Positive screening outcomes are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection timeframe: Detects drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter window with urine tests.
  • High resistance to cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Provides usage trends: Offers insights into drug use patterns over time, not limited to recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally costlier compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variable results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The benefits of hair testing over traditional urine tests are many in Lake Shore, WA. Hair tests showcase superior detection accuracy with a broader detection window compared to urine tests. This method prevails in capturing substance histories that are often missed by the fleeting snapshots provided by urine samples.

Employers and institutions prioritize hair tests due to their reliability; a choice strengthened by the comprehensive, unobtrusive, and accurate results these deliver, setting them apart from standard urine testing methodologies.

Extended Detection Window

In Lake Shore, WA, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing is a major advantage. Capable of detecting drug use up to 90 days prior, it offers employers a detailed snapshot of an individual’s substance habits. This broader time frame aids in making informed decisions regarding potential hires or current employees.

Beyond initial screenings, this testing methodology ensures ongoing assessment accuracy, providing a long-term view that urine shortfalls simply can't match. This distinct capability forms a core strength of hair follicle testing.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing is a tamper-resistant method that highly reduces sample adulteration risks in Lake Shore, WA. The biological design of hair captures drug traces over time, making it challenging for any fraudulent alteration to occur post-sample collection.

This robust resistance to tampering establishes hair testing as a trusted option for those necessitating untainted, multipart results. The meticulous collection process assures an integrity level unparalleled by other testing forms.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
