Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Lakebay, Washington. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, turn to Accredited Drug Testing, a specialist in hair testing with facilities located throughout the United States. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed for testing purposes. Our hair tests can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing possibilities.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has become a more prevalent method for drug testing. Various employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. Organizations with strict no-drug usage policies, courts, and probationers often utilize hair follicle tests. A key advantage of hair testing is its longer detection period of approximately 90 days, collected under supervision, reducing the likelihood of tampering. However, for drug detection within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a formidable technique for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of substances by embedding biomarkers in the structure of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over an estimated 3-month span. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for both screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations above 10 panels, 150mg of the hair is ideal. It's advisable to determine the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's database. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and delivered, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data omissions absent in an electronic custody system.

Screening pertains to a preliminary rapid drug presence assessment. Although Screening is an economical approach to negate drug exposure in most samples, a Screening positive must be validated for courtroom acceptability. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further affirmation.

If Screening marks a sample as presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from the hair at a substantially lower concentration than other processes (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing as warranted before confirmation. The full laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and conformity to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine assessments which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Ensuring a hair drug evaluation is nearly impossible to subvert, enhancing result credibility.
  • Offers historical insight: It can disclose a drug use trend over time, beyond immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify immediate usage: Drugs generally appear in hair 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations tend to be pricier compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair hue and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
