Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Lamona, Washington. Whether you seek a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist in hair diagnostics, with testing centers in cities nationwide. A minimum length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is recommended from the crown or other parts. Hair can be screened for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored test options.

In recent times, drug screenings increasingly incorporate hair follicle assessments. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts are often turning to hair tests over traditional urine screenings, particularly for those adhering to strict drug-free policies, legal mandates, or probation requirements. Hair testing provides an extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, using an observed collection method that is difficult to evade. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a vital method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged record of substance usage by preserving biomarkers within the fiber structure of the hair as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage for a period reaching up to around three months. The collection of hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A collection of a 1.5-inch sample with about 200 hairs (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) from as close to the scalp as possible yields 100mg of hair, considered the optimal amount for initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG assessments, additional tests, and/or when there are more than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair alone. Body hair covers any other type of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result primarily includes these four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the primary handling of a sample as it's integrated into a laboratory’s processes. This step involves checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the preliminary step to swiftly identify drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical strategy to dismiss drug use for the majority of samples, any positive result needs verification for it to hold in a legal setting. Samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is flagged as presumptively positive during Screening, additional strands are taken from the initial sample for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drug substances are removed from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive result from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity undergo a wash before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation observes both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designations and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Comprehensive detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Integrity of test: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks usage patterns: It can reveal a usage trend over a timeline, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incipient use detection: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
