Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Lewisville, Washington. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise is in hair testing, and we have facilities in every city Nationwide ready to administer a hair test. Generally, you should have between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of your head or body. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

Recently, drug testing approaches have increasingly utilized hair follicle tests. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse Professionals opt for hair drug testing over traditional urine sampling. These tests are chosen when employers enforce strict no-drug-use policies, by judicial systems, and for individuals on probation. The main advantage is an extended detection window for drug use—typically up to 90 days—administered through an observed collection that is nearly impervious to tampering. Nonetheless, for identifying drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an efficient method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It records a historical account of alcohol and drugs by locking biomarkers within the hairs as they form. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection range of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for testing and confirmation. For EtG, supplements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of the sample is provided. It's advised to weigh the sample on a precision scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal quantity of body hair may be taken. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair covers all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of analyzing a drug test result involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample in a lab’s database. It involves checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial check for substances of abuse. While Screening is cost-efficient for negating drug use in most samples, a positive finding requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that show presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In case a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are pulled from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other types (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocols and accreditation by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Gives historical insight: Presents a usage pattern over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other types.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Even though it's often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
