Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle examinations for substances in Long Lake, Washington. If you need to test for drugs or alcohol via hair, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist. We provide hair testing services in cities across the country. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head's crown or elsewhere on the body. Hair tests can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle analysis. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are more frequently opting for hair testing over conventional urine testing. These tests are utilized by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation officers. The chief advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug detection period of up to 90 days, conducted under direct observation, and its resistance to manipulation. Nonetheless, urine testing remains most precise for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting substance and alcohol usage. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Gathered near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. The collection process for hair is straightforward, its tampering is relatively challenging, and it is convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of around 200 hair strands (about the circumference of a #2 pencil) from closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In case scalp hair isn't available, an equal quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Conversely, body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase where a sample is processed into a lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage in the majority of samples, any positive screen must be verified for court acceptability. Samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening must undergo a secondary verification.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is considered the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result ensues through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests possess a shorter detection period.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely complex, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Yields historical insights: It provides a drug use pattern over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable within hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing methods in Long Lake, WA, hair follicle testing stands out over urine testing. Hair tests offer superior accuracy and reliability, tracing drug use effectively over longer periods. Extended Detection Window

Employers in Long Lake, WA appreciate hair follicle testing for its extended detection window of up to 90 days. This advantage offers a thorough assessment of an individual's substance history, surpassing traditional methods. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
