Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Lost Creek, Washington. Whether you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our hair testing expertise is unmatched. With testing facilities across all U.S. cities, we offer convenient hair tests that typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair. Hair samples can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized based on specific testing needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly prevalent in recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations implementing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary cases see the value in hair testing's extended detection timeframe—up to 90 days—ensuring thorough oversight without the chance of evasion. For detecting recent use within five days, urine tests still provide precise results.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective way to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in its growing strands. When hair is taken near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and can be easily transported.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in diameter) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. Note, head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in processing a drug test in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of entering a sample into the laboratory's database. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any manual data entry required outside the electronic custody chain.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs. Although it's a cost-efficient means to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive screen result must be validated for judicial use. Samples displaying presumptive positivity in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening indicates potential positivity, more hair is drawn from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening particularly complex.

Positive results need validation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptively positive samples undergo washing if necessary. The entirety of the lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, complies with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program standards and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair test is tough, leading to more reliable results.
  • Tracks usage history: It reveals a historical drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests are often pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
