Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Malaga, Washington. If a hair drug or alcohol screening is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair screening and offers testing facilities in all cities Nationwide equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body suffices. Hair screenings can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer bespoke hair testing alternatives.

Recently, drug testing strategies have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug assessments. Numerous employers, judiciary bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists now favor hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug use policies, courts, and probation individuals prefer hair follicle assays. The main advantage is the extended drug use detection duration of up to 90 days, secured through an observed collection process, making it nearly foolproof. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use within a recent 5-day window, the urine test remains the preferred method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly been recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substance use by encasing biomarkers in the strands as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to roughly three months. Its collection is straightforward, it's relatively resistant to tampering, and it can be easily transported.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional screens, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is advised. If no scalp hair is available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four predominant phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a sample into a lab’s system. It entails checking that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizing any outstanding data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid analysis for illicit substances. While Screening is an economical approach for evaluating the absence of drugs in most samples, any positive screen result requires verification to be admissible in legal contexts. Samples that initially test positive during Screening undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample initially test positive during Screening, an additional quantity of hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug testing is the most complex method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, complies with the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistant to deception: It is considerably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical perspective: It can trace patterns of drug usage over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: The tests often called "hair follicle tests" actually examine the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
