Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services available in Manzanita, Washington. If you're seeking a hair alcohol or drug test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in these assessments, with facilities nationwide, including all major cities, to facilitate your hair testing needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is necessary for testing. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or entail other custom testing choices.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has been more widely adopted for drug detection. Several employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now opt for hair tests rather than typical urine screenings. Hair follicle tests serve those maintaining zero-tolerance protocols, court requirements, or probation terms. A key advantage of hair testing is the extended detection period of nearly 90 days, with samples collected under supervision, which significantly reduces the chance of manipulation. Nevertheless, for detecting drug usage within the past five days, urine tests still provide the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. The hair structure captures a prolonged history of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the strand as it grows. When collected adjacent to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period for drugs and alcohol extending up to roughly three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, generally tamper-resistant, and can be transported with ease.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising roughly 200 hairs (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) taken from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for tests and confirmations. For EtG, extra checks, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be unattainable, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core processes in the lab analysis of drug test samples are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step whereby a sample is integrated into a laboratory’s systems. This process checks that the sample packaging is intact, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any manual data inputs not covered by electronic custody measures.

Screening serves as an initial swift check for substance misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to discount drug presence in most samples, a confirmed positive result is necessary for legal acceptability. Samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening undergo additional verification.

If a sample tests preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair analysis is the most demanding method to execute.

Any positive results from screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples initially positive are washed before confirmation, where applicable. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is meticulously assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests can trace substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter period.
  • Cheating is difficult: The ability to manipulate a hair test is minimal, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical substance use: It can showcase a trend of substance use over an extended timeframe, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectability: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Compared to other methods, hair tests are generally more expensive.
  • Result variance: Variables such as hair color and individual growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair itself and not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
