Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Marengo, Washington. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this field with a network of testing facilities across all cities Nationwide, ready to conduct a hair drug screening. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is sufficient for most cases. These tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized hair testing options.

In recent times, the adoption of hair follicle drug testing has grown. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse authorities now favour hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation increasingly use these tests. The main advantage of using hair follicle tests lies in their extended detection window for drug use—generally up to 90 days—which is overseen in a monitored collection process, making it nearly foolproof. However, urine testing remains the gold standard for detecting drug use within the immediate past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for assessing drug and alcohol usage. The hair retains a comprehensive history of substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, this method can detect the presence of drugs and alcohol for up to about 90 days. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to have 150mg of the sample. The specimen should be weighed on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, it specifically denotes scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The four primary stages involved in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug consumption for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests are capable of detecting drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a briefer detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, thus the results are more reliable.
  • Offers historical data: It can reveal a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the level of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: Despite often being termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Surpasses Urine Testing: In Marengo, WA, when considering testing options, hair follicle testing distinctly outshines traditional urine tests. The primary benefit is its superior detection capability and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
