In Marshall, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle screenings. Specializing in both hair drug and alcohol assessments, we have centers across the Nation, ready to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Hair follicle testing has grown in popularity for drug screenings. Many employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer it over urine tests. It is favored for its longer detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection, and resistance to manipulation. Despite its benefits, urine tests remain accurate for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended timeline of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipment.

A 1.5-inch lock of around 200 hairs (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg, the perfect quantity for preliminary and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair mean only scalp hair. Body hair involves all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial sample processing in a laboratory’s system, ensuring the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening incorporates a preliminary rapid check for abuse drugs. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court acceptability. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is among the most challenging methods.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is formally reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, providing more reliable results.
  • Offers past data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests often carry higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Marshall, WA, hair follicle testing significantly outweighs urine testing in terms of detection requirements. Hair testing not only offers superior accuracy but is also less susceptible to deception. For businesses committed to maintaining a drug-free environment, hair tests provide a comprehensive solution that urine tests cannot match due to limited detection windows.

Considered more reliable, hair screenings allow for detecting drug use over a greater timeframe, providing insights that are much more substantial than a brief snapshot of current substance levels. This comprehensive evaluation supports employers in making more informed decisions.

Extended Detection Window

In Marshall, WA, hair follicle analysis is renowned for its extended detection window, covering approximately 90 days. This timeframe offers employers a broader perspective on an individual's substance history, thus aiding in making sound employment decisions based on long-term drug use analytics.

This prolonged evaluation period extends beyond the surface-level insight provided by urine assessments. With a focus on long-term patterns, hair tests reveal consistent behavior, equipping employers with data that extends beyond recent activities.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing offers a tamper-resistant method in Marshall, WA. This technique minimizes the risk of sample adulteration, ensuring that results are both reliable and authentic. Unlike urine testing, hair tests are incredibly challenging to mask or alter, thus offering a more secure avenue for drug assessment.

This resistance is crucial for workplaces aiming to uphold integrity in drug-use detection. The stringent collection protocols employed by hair testing facilities ensure that collected samples maintain their authenticity from start to finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
