Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Medical Lake, Washington. If a hair drug or alcohol screening is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair testing with facilities across all cities Nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair is required. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing solutions.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly utilized hair follicle drug tests. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair tests over standard urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation rely on hair testing; its key advantage is a much longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected under observation, making tampering nearly impossible. However, for substance use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the developing hair strands. When sampled near the scalp, hair can show a detection timeframe of approximately 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 hairs (roughly the width of a #2 pencil), nearest the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. The term 'head hair' specifically denotes scalp hair, while 'body hair' indicates all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results follows four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with the initial sample processing in the laboratory system. This step includes ensuring the sample's seal and correct shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry if not already covered by an electronic chain of custody procedure.

Screening acts as an initial cursory review for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

When Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. At this phase, drug extraction from hair is at a lower concentration than through other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), signifying the high complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory protocol, spanning from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating the results of a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just capturing recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests bear a higher price tag than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
