Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Mill Creek East, Washington. For those requiring hair-based drug or alcohol assessments, we excel in this testing method and have facilities across the nation to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a part of drug testing protocols. This method is preferred by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over standard urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and those overseeing individuals on probation. Its primary advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, collected under observed procedures, and nearly impossible to falsify. Yet, for detecting drugs used within the last five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and illicit substances by embedding biomarkers in the strands of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a three-month detection period for alcohol and illicit substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, or analyses exceeding 10 panels, it's recommended to use 150mg of the sample. We advise measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test outcome in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This process ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although it is a cost-efficient strategy to discount drug use in most samples, a positive screening outcome must be verified to be valid in legal settings. All samples that are tentatively positive in Screening demand an additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, further hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this procedure, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower levels than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can discern drug usage for a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, increasing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a timeline of drug use over a duration, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It takes nearly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Mill Creek East, WA
When comparing hair follicle and urine drug tests, hair testing stands out in Mill Creek East for its superior detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, which typically reveal recent drug usage, hair tests can detect substances taken over a longer period, offering greater insight into a person's drug history.

In addition to the extended detection window, hair tests are nearly impossible to beat due to the method of collection and analysis. This ensures that the results are consistently reliable and accurate, making them the preferred choice for many employers and courts.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
