Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Moxee, Washington. Whether your requirement is a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing spans across cities Nationwide, capable of executing such tests. In most scenarios, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific testing criteria.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence in drug analysis methods. This testing is now more prevalent among employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals compared to standard urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers generally opt for hair follicle testing due to its extended detection capability of up to 90 days, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, for drug use assessment within the last 5 days, urine tests remain extremely accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a long-term overview of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. Sampling hair near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and it can be easily shipped.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields approximately 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or analyses with more than 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used instead. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary phases in processing a drug test result within the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's system. This phase ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, cost-effective analysis for detecting drugs of abuse. While it efficiently rules out drug use in most samples, a positive screening result must be confirmed to be legally valid. Any samples flagged as potentially positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process, where drugs are extracted from hair in lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid). This makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It offers a drug use pattern over time, rather than capturing only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent usage: It takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Moxee, WA

Hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy and extendable detection window.

While urine tests are often limited to a short detection period, hair follicles can reveal drug use over several months, offering a detailed understanding of an individual's substance habits.

The reliability of hair testing makes it an ideal choice for detecting long-term drug use, reducing the likelihood of false negatives often seen in urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
