What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a protracted timeline of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When cut close to the scalp, it can reveal up to a three-month history of alcohol and drug use. Collecting hair samples is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A specimen of 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp ensures 100mg of hair, the perfect sample size for analysis. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It is advised to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar amount of body hair may be used. Reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in the laboratory's drug testing process include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the primary processing of a sample within a lab’s system. This process verifies proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any missing data not initially available from the electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary drug check. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug use for many samples, positive results must be confirmed for court validity. Samples with presumptive positive Screening outcomes require further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is obtained from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair a challenging testing methodology.

For any positive Screening outcomes, Confirmation is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to Confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a 90-day span, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Increased difficulty to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical usage: Provides a drug use pattern over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not for recent detection: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing is often pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variations in hair color and growth patterns can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests," these tests assess the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Surpasses Urine Testing in Nemah, WA
Hair follicle tests outperform traditional urine tests by offering higher detection accuracy and reliability. Their capacity to reveal prolonged substance use provides superior insights as opposed to urine testing, which captures recent consumption only.

Unmatched Detection Period
Contrary to urine tests, hair analysis in Nemah, WA, offers an extended detection period, offering a comprehensive evaluation of substance use over time, which standard tests fail to deliver.

Extended Detection Window
