In New London, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services. We are experts in hair-based analysis for drugs and alcohol, with testing facilities available nationwide in every city. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the scalp or body is required for testing. These hair assessments can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests are increasingly common as a method for drug testing. Employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse experts often prefer them over traditional urine tests. They're especially useful for employers enforcing no-drug policies, legal authorities, and probation officers. A key advantage is the extended drug-use detection window of up to 90 days. The test is conducted under observation, making it very difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain most reliable for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a key tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair yields a historical record of alcohol and substance use. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection timeline for alcohol and substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands, comparable to a #2 pencil’s width, closest to the scalp, is needed for an effective screening and confirmation, providing 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar volume of body hair can be gathered. Head hair pertains to scalp hair exclusively, whereas body hair encompasses all other kinds of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

In laboratory processing of a drug test result, there are four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing phase of a sample into the laboratory system. This step includes confirming the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplemental data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for drug abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug use in most cases, a confirmed result is required for legal admissibility. Any samples identified as potentially positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests potentially positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positives are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025.

Pros of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug testing is difficult to cheat, ensuring higher accuracy of results.
  • Tracks historical consumption: It reveals a trend of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis tends to be pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine testing in New London, WA, the former provides clear advantages. Hair tests offer a longer look-back period, capturing drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover only a few days. This extensive timeframe grants employers a more comprehensive insight into an individual's substance habits, crucial for maintaining a drug-free workplace environment.

Furthermore, the reliability of hair testing is far superior to urine testing due to its lesser susceptibility to tampering. This robust method delivers dependable results, which are pivotal for organizations implementing rigorous drug policies. Thus, hair tests not only outshine traditional urine tests in terms of the detection span but also in providing indisputable findings crucial to employers.

Extended Detection Window

One of the primary benefits of hair follicle testing in New London, WA, is its extended detection window. Where other tests like urinalysis provide a brief overview of recent usage, hair testing scans up to 90 days into the past. This extensive insight equips employers with valuable data on an individual's long-term substance use history, aiding in more informed and accurate decision-making.

This expansive detection period is essential for organizations striving to maintain a drug-free environment. It offers a robust means to assess ongoing commitment to substance policies and avoids the limitations presented by shorter-term detection of other testing methods. Employers can confidently rely on this test to gauge an employee's past and present drug use patterns comprehensively.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

New London, WA employers highly regard hair follicle tests due to their resistance to tampering. While other testing methods can be tricked through substitution or adulteration, hair samples offer a consistent and virtually untamperable solution. This integrity provides reliable and trustworthy test results, vital for workplaces enforcing stringent drug regulations.

The structure of hair follicle testing ensures meticulous sample handling and processing, making manipulation efforts largely ineffective. By using this method, employers can confidently trust that results reflect an accurate depiction of an individual's substance usage without fear of tampering, which is crucial for preserving the integrity of workplace safety and compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
