Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug screening in Nisqually Indian Community, Washington. Specializing in hair drug or alcohol tests, we operate nationwide, ready to conduct hair tests at numerous locations. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Hair analyses detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a more common approach in recent times for drug screening. They're favored by employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Such tests are crucial for entities with strict no-drug-use policies, law courts, and individuals on probation. A major advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days. Despite this, urine testing remains more reliable for identifying recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination has emerged as an effective mechanism for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the evolving hair filament. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal approximately a three-month detection duration for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to alteration, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch snippet containing approximately 200 strands of hair (akin to a #2 pencil’s thickness) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for preliminary and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory evaluation of drug test results consists of four pivotal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a specimen within a laboratory's system. This stage involves confirming proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not supplied via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial rapid assessment for drug misuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most specimens, a positive screening outcome requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples detected as presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing notably challenging to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is completed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Manipulating hair drug tests is particularly challenging, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Chronological data: It provides insights into drug usage patterns over time, contrary to only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Delay in detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically bear higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Resultal variations: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these tests assess the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
