In North Marysville, WA, Accredited Drug Testing is your trusted provider for comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. Whether you require assessments for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is at your service. We operate nationwide facilities for your convenience, requiring only 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, typically from the crown or body. Hair tests can cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specially requested analyses.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence over traditional methods. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction experts increasingly prefer hair drug tests to the conventional urine tests. Especially favored by zero-tolerance policy employers and for probation monitoring, these tests offer a detection span of up to 90 days, are observed in collection, and feature high resistance to tampering. For drug usage within the past five days, however, urine tests still provide optimal accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are now regarded as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When extracted near the root, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A sample of about 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and for panels exceeding 10 categories, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If head hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be retrieved. Head hair specifically indicates scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the lab analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves validating the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input not provided by an electronic custody protocol.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage for the bulk of samples, any positive screening outcomes must be substantiated for legal admissibility. Samples presumed positive during the Screening phase must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is the most intricate methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening finding is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All originally positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation if required. The full laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized in line with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug examinations can trace drug usage up to 90 days, compared to the briefer window of urine tests.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can map out drug consumption patterns over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: Drugs typically require 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations tend to be pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
