At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Northeast Yakima, Washington. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in hair examination and offer testing facilities nationwide. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head, although body hair can sometimes be used. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Over recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly leaned towards hair follicle tests. This type is often favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. The benefits include an extended detection window, up to 90 days, collected under direct observation. It's much harder to falsify results, although for recent drug use (last 5 days), urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. Collected near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol presence for up to three months. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing approximately 200 hairs (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, deemed ideal for both screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, additional tests, or more than 10-panel testing, a 150mg sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advisable. If scalp hair isn't an option, a comparative amount of body hair might be used. In context, 'head hair' refers solely to scalp hair, while 'body hair' includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results consists of four key stages, namely Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample was securely sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid check for drugs. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a court-admissible result requires confirmation of a positive screening. Samples that are initially positive in Screening mandates a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample be initially positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. This process extracts drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a more complex procedure.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples appearing positive are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria alongside accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests reveal drug usage up to 90 days back, whereas urine tests have shorter detection spans.
  • Fraud resistance: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronological substance usage record: Provides a history of drug usage over some time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediacy: Drugs aren't detectable in hair until approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expensive: Hair drug evaluations typically cost more relative to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variances might influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the scalp follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to drug testing in Northeast Yakima, WA, hair follicle testing stands out against traditional urine tests. Unlike urine tests, hair tests cover a much longer detection period, offering employers a detailed view of drug use history. This increased accuracy makes it superior and more reliable.

Urine tests, though effective, can be limited by shorter detection windows. Hair tests, however, provide a comprehensive record of drug or alcohol intake over the past few months, which is invaluable for organizations with strict drug-free mandates.

Extended Detection Window

One of the greatest advantages of hair follicle testing in Northeast Yakima, WA, is its extended detection window, capable of identifying drug consumption up to 90 days prior. This gives employers a more thorough insight into an individual’s history of substance use.

With its ability to capture an extensive period of substance history, hair testing is invaluable. Employers seeking detailed evaluations can depend on this method for a broader perspective compared to other testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Northeast Yakima, WA residents can rely on hair follicle testing for its tamper-proof nature. This method minimizes the risk of sample adulteration, providing reliable outcomes. The testing technique reduces any opportunities for manipulating results, enhancing trust and dependability.

As opposed to other testing procedures, hair follicle analysis ensures the integrity of each sample. This unwavering reliability fortifies its status as a dependable choice for accurate substance detection without doubts of tampering.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
