Located in Northwest Benton, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing offers hair follicle drug testing services. Our expert team is equipped to handle hair drug and alcohol tests nationwide, providing centers for testing in every city. To perform a test, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, sourced from the crown or body. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more tailored hair analyses.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more popular for screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over typical urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and those on probation favor this method. Its main advantage is a detection range of approximately 90 days, collected under supervision, making it hard to tamper with. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent drug use up to 5 days prior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers in its fibers, offering a long-term record of alcohol and drugs as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use history for up to about three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg, the perfect quantity for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key procedures in the lab analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample into the lab’s database. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input not covered by an electronic custody tracking system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for illicit substances. While Screening serves as a budget-friendly method for ruling out drug use in most samples, any positive screen must be substantiated to be court-admissible. Any sample that tests presumptively positive during Screening requires subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample be deemed presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are plucked from hair at lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging to execute.

Positive screening confirmations are performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is exceptionally challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers past usage data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time rather than recent use only.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Results may vary: Factors like hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
