Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug tests in Orting, Washington. Need a hair or alcohol test? Our centers, present in every city nationwide, specialize in hair sampling. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is required. Hair tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other bespoke testing options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a more common method for drug testing. They are favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, as well as legal and probationary bodies, often use them. The main advantage of these tests lies in their extended detection up to 90 days, observation during collection, and high level of cheating resistance. For drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs, capturing biomarkers in its strands as it grows. When cut near the head, hair can reveal a drug and alcohol history spanning up to three months. Hair is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch piece consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is perfect for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If head hair isn't an option, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in lab analysis for drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is logged into the lab's database. This involves checking that the sample is sealed and transported correctly, issuing a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not captured by a digital chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment to identify signs of drug usage. While it's cost-efficient for dismissing drug usage in most cases, a favorable screening result requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Presumptive positive samples from Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positives during Screening, extra hair is utilized from the original sample for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at significantly reduced concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting hair drug screening's complexity.

Positive screening results are verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positive undergo necessary washing before confirmation. Each lab step from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a limited detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers usage history: It illustrates drug use patterns over time rather than merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot uncover recent usage: Drugs typically become traceable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Outcome variance: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", this assessment examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outperform urine tests in Orting, WA? The superior detection accuracy and reliability of hair tests make them stand out. While urine tests offer a shorter window of detection, hair tests allow a more comprehensive insight into an individual’s substance use. This lengthened timeframe is ideal for employers needing detailed substance history over the last three months.

Extended Detection Window

In Orting, WA, the power of hair follicle testing is in its ability to detect drug use for up to 90 days. This extensive detection window provides employers with a thorough overview of an individual's substance history. A more extended period of assessment ensures that employers make well-informed decisions concerning employees or potential new hires.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
