Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Parkland, Washington. If a hair-based drug or alcohol examination is required, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this field, with centers located nationwide, capable of conducting hair evaluations. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body can be utilized. Hair analysis can uncover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or various tailored testing selections.

More recently, drug testing processes have increasingly included hair follicle evaluations. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often favor a hair analysis over conventional urine tests. Firms with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation benefit from the extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it extremely difficult to evade. Yet, urine tests remain the preferred choice for detecting recent drug activity within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluation is now recognized as an effective means for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of these substances by capturing biomarkers within the hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present up to a three-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, less prone to tampering, and simple to dispatch.

An example of a 1.5-inch hair portion, consisting of approximately 200 strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will offer 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be unattainable, a comparable volume of body hair can be harvested. Note, when mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a specimen into a laboratory system. This entails checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening pertains to an initial swift assessment for drug abuse. While this is a cost-efficient technique to exclude drug use for the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be permissible in legal settings. Any sample presumed positive during Screening demands further confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are retrieved from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive receive a wash before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a substantially shorter timeframe.
  • Improbability of deceit: Cheating a hair drug screening is quite improbable, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Furnishes historical insight: It reveals usage patterns over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Detectability of drugs in hair requires about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations might influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand, excluding the root.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests in Parkland, WA, offer significant advantages over traditional urine tests. Their superior detection capability and reliability make them a preferred choice for many organizations. Hair testing reaches back further, providing a longer window of detection and thus, presenting a more comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history.

Benefits such as resilience to tampering and a more extensive detection period contribute to its growing preference among employers and courts. Unlike urine tests, which may only capture recent use, hair follicle screenings assess a longer timeframe, offering a thorough snapshot of drug use patterns.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Parkland, WA, offers a significantly extended detection period over traditional testing methods. Capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, this method gives employers a more comprehensive view of an individual’s substance history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
