Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle analysis in Plymouth, Washington. Whenever a hair drug or alcohol analysis is necessary, we have proficiency in these tests and possess facilities in every city Nationwide to conduct them. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is suitable. Tests can reveal traces of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and various other options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts increasingly choose hair tests over urine tests. These tests are vital for zero-tolerance policies, legal decisions, and probation cases. Their key advantage is the prolonged detection window, capturing drug use up to 90 days and proving nearly impossible to tamper with, although urine tests remain superior for identifying recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the dimension of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the ideal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step involves verifying the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid inspection for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be authenticated to be permissible in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptively positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the starting sample and prepped for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from the hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is among the most complex methodologies to implement.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug analysis can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is very challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Supplies historical data: It can outline a pattern of drug use over a time frame, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur more cost than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
