In Port Blakely, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether it’s a drug or alcohol test you require, our expertise is in hair testing. We boast a national network of testing facilities capable of conducting these examinations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. This analysis can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screening methods. Businesses, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often opt for it over urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationers frequently use hair tests. Their advantage is a longer detection window for drug use, up to 90 days, verified through a supervised process that is difficult to subvert. For recent drug use, however, urine tests remain more precise within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair strands capture biomarkers, providing a historical record of substance use through their growth. When collected near the scalp, such hair samples can offer a detection period of up to 90 days for both alcohol and other drugs. Hair samples are uncomplicated to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and effortless to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent in thickness to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation analyses. For EtG, multiple tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. In cases where scalp hair is unobtainable, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically indicate scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results entails four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with the sample's integration into the lab’s system, ensuring it was correctly sealed and transported, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a rapid initial assessment for drug abuse. Although cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screening result must be validated for legal admissibility. Any presumptively positive samples during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for further Extraction. This phase involves obtaining drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Confirmatory assessments of positive screening results are performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positives are washed as required before confirmation. The entire processing sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection ranges.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a timeline of drug usage over an extended duration, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Potential result variances: Variables such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Port Blakely, WA, hair follicle testing stands out due to its superior detection capabilities over traditional urine tests. These tests offer more reliable results, reflecting a comprehensive view of an individual’s drug history. This contrasts with urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.

Employers prefer hair testing for its high accuracy and minimal likelihood of manipulation. Hair tests detect drug use over a longer timeframe, providing a more informative picture of someone's substance use history.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Port Blakely, WA, provides an extended detection window for drug use, up to 90 days. This comprehensive span allows employers to accurately assess an individual's substance use history over a substantial period.

Unlike other testing methods, hair analysis offers a broader perspective into drug consumption patterns, enabling a deeper understanding of an employee's or candidate's lifestyle choices and potential risk factors.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
