Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Queets, Washington. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is highly versed in hair testing, with facilities located in cities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used, and these tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific hair testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for conducting drug screenings. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation opt for hair follicle tests. The primary advantage is an extended detection window of up to 90 days, with samples collected under supervision, making it nearly impossible to bypass. On the other hand, for detecting drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains biomarkers within its fiber strands, reflecting a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use. When collected near the scalp, it can reveal a detection timeline of up to three months for these substances. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG add-ons or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four essential stages in laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning phase involves initially integrating a sample into a laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry that wasn't covered by an electronic chain of custody.

During Screening, a preliminary rapid check for drug abuse is conducted. Although Screening is a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug use in most cases, positive results must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that test presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive after Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the next phase, Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower levels compared to other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to conduct.

Confirming any positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted in compliance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the accreditation against ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Manipulating hair drug tests is nearly impossible, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Offers historical patterns: Provides insight into drug use over an extended period, not just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually evaluates the hair strand rather than the scalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
