Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analyses in Quinault, Washington. When a hair drug or alcohol evaluation is necessary, we excel in this area, with testing sites in every major U.S. city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the scalp or an alternative body area, is sufficient. Hair evaluations can test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for various other testing needs.

Hair follicle drug assessments have increasingly become the norm in recent years. They are favored by many companies, legal courts, and addiction treatment specialists over the traditional urine tests. Companies with strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and probation monitoring often prefer these tests. The standout advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under direct supervision, making it nearly foolproof. However, urine tests still hold an edge for detecting very recent drug use, within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair's developing strand. When extracted near the scalp, hair offers about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is effortless to collect, difficult to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advisable. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. Reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair denotes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This process involves confirming that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entries not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary rapid check for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal acceptability. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The whole laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair testing can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug testing is difficult to deceive, leading to more accurate results.
  • Reflects historical usage: It can illustrate a trend of drug use over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost implications: Hair drug tests tend to be more expensive than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Characteristics like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests," the examination itself targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
