Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Republic, Washington. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area with facilities in numerous cities Nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed for testing. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts opt for hair tests rather than traditional urine tests. Hair tests are vital for entities enforcing strict anti-drug use policies, legal bodies, and individuals on probation. Their advantage lies in a longer detection window, up to 90 days, collected under watchful supervision, making cheating extremely difficult. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now widely recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair retains a prolonged history of alcohol and other substance usage by embedding biomarkers in its strands as it grows. When harvested near the scalp, hair delivers approximately a 90-day detection window for alcohol and drug use. The collection process is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and verification. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" refers strictly to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the preliminary stage of integrating a sample into the lab's system. This necessitates ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched appropriately, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry if not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening implies a swift preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening efficiently excludes drug use for the majority of samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation to be accepted legally. Samples that return presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample demonstrate a preliminary positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for Extraction. At this juncture, the drugs are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), hence why hair drug screening is the most challenging to conduct.

Any positive screening findings are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair title and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug intake up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests, which offer a more restricted detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, resulting in higher accuracy in the outcomes.
  • Offers historical data: It provides a timeline of drug use over a period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent intake: Drugs require about 5-7 days before becoming traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternate drug testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
