Located in Richmond Highlands, WA, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Specializing in this arena, we have facilities in every city Nationwide ready to perform these tests. Primarily, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is needed. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

Hair follicle tests are on the rise for drug screening, increasingly preferred over urine tests by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. These tests suit zero-tolerance policies and those on probation thanks to an extended 90-day detection window and strict collection method, making them tamper-proof. Although, for recent drug use, urine tests remain most accurate within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair can present up to a three-month timeframe for detecting drugs and alcohol. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches, made up of approximately 200 strands of hair (around the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation purposes. For tests such as EtG, additional screenings, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. The term body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial hair, axillary hair, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in the lab analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This process verifies if the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any additional information missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for the presence of drugs. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss the presence of drugs in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid legally. Samples presumed positive in Screening must undergo another level of confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this point, drugs are drawn from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those detected in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which justifies the complexity in conducting hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screen is carried out employing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumed positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Not easily manipulated: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can depict a pattern of drug intake across a timeline, not merely reflecting recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Ineffective for recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
