In River Road, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing provides full hair follicle drug testing services. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers across all cities nationwide. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for testing. We offer assessments for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing choices.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common component of drug screening. They're increasingly used by employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers often favor hair tests for their extended detection period, up to 90 days, observed collections, and resistance to evasion. However, urine tests remain precise for assessing recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by capturing markers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can provide a detection span of up to around 3 months for substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, considered the best sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair pertains to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types like facial or axillary hair.

Procedure Summary

The vital stages in lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and sent, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary swift assessment for drugs. While it is a cost-effective measure to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result needs further validation to be court-acceptable. Samples showing presumptive positive in Screening necessitate secondary verification.

Should a sample's Screening phase return presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), rendering hair drug evaluations the toughest procedures to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Upsides of hair drug assessments:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair assessments detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair assessments are resistant to cheating, thus increasing accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: They provide a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Not suitable for recent detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair assessments tend to be pricier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The test, commonly mislabeled as "hair follicle tests", actually analyzes the hair strand, not the under-scalp hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In River Road, WA, hair follicle testing stands out as a superior choice over conventional urine tests. The key advantage of hair testing lies in its unparalleled accuracy and reliability, offering a more robust detection of substance use.

Unlike urine tests, which might miss long-term drug usage, hair follicle tests provide employers and courts with a more extended detection window, making them invaluable in maintaining strict zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in River Road, WA provides an extensive detection window, capable of uncovering drug use for up to 90 days. This broad timeframe helps employers gain a detailed view of an individual’s substance use history.

By employing hair follicle tests, organizations ensure they are not overlooking past drug use that might otherwise remain hidden with shorter-range testing methods like urine screens.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

River Road, WA relies on hair follicle testing for its tamper-resistant nature. These tests significantly reduce the possibility of sample tampering or adulteration, providing accurate and reliable results.

Unlike urine tests, which can be easily manipulated, hair tests maintain their integrity from collection to analysis, ensuring the outcomes are trustworthy and hard to contest.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
