Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Robe, Washington. For those needing a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing with centers nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customizable options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer them over standard urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation utilize hair tests. These tests offer a longer detection window of up to 90 days, are collected under observation, and are nearly foolproof. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, it can reveal substance use over a span of roughly three months. The collection process for hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches of hair, around 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) closest to the scalp, weighs approximately 100mg, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result procedure in a lab consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial introduction of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This phase verifies the sample's sealing and shipping integrity, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. While this stage is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, positive results must be confirmed for legal acceptability in court. Samples with presumptively positive results during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, a longer duration compared to urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring greater accuracy of the findings.
  • Shows historical usage: It showcases a timeline of drug use, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • No immediate usage detection: Drugs need roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", they actually assess the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
