Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Rockford, Washington. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol through hair analysis, our expertise lies in this area, and we have numerous testing facilities across all cities nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body can be used. Hair testing can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method. This shift is evident as more employers, courts, and substance abuse experts choose hair analysis over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and probation officers favor hair tests. Their significant advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected securely to prevent tampering, offering nearly foolproof accuracy. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to around three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a size #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any supplementary data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation to be legally viable. Any samples that are provisionally positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

Should a sample be provisionally positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most challenging techniques to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All provisionally positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a limited detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely difficult to cheat a hair drug test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical data: It can show a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent incidents.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
