Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rollingbay, Washington. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our company specializes in such methods and provides testing across all cities nationwide. For most cases, a hair sample from 1.5 to 2 inches long on the crown of the head or body suffices. Our tests can analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer custom hair testing solutions.

In recent years, methods for drug screening have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over the standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation overseers utilize these tests. A prime advantage of hair drug testing is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, following observed collection and offering resistance to tampering. However, for detecting recent drug consumption within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer an estimated 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (approximating the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample quantity for both screening and verification. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, and/or exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of the sample. It is suggested to weigh the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. Reference to head hair denotes only scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses any other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The predominant phases in the lab processing of a drug testing outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This consists of ensuring that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any extra data entries that an electronic chain of custody system may not cover.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for abusive drugs. Even though Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for court acceptability. Any samples suspected as positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample is suspected of being positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for preparation in Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a concentration substantially lower than that from other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Any confirmed positive screening results are further analyzed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection interval.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Delivers historical information: It offers a record of drug use over a span, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the metabolite concentrations of drugs in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
