In Roy, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. Whether for drugs or alcohol analysis, our specialized centers, located nationwide, stand ready to perform these tests. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body parts, these tests effectively screen for substances like drugs and alcohol/ETG or can be tailored to specific needs.

Recent trends indicate an increased preference for hair follicle drug tests over urine tests. This shift is driven by the demands of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals. Hair tests are favored for their zero-tolerance policy enforcement, longer detection window of up to 90 days, and the difficulty of cheating. Despite this, urine tests remain the best choice for spotting recent drug use within a 5-day span.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol usage. By encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand, hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other substances. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month detection period for these substances. Collection of hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. We advise weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent volume of body hair may be collected. References to head hair specify only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test result in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory's system. This verifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift examination for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical approach to rule out drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is essential to hold up in court. Any samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the primary specimen for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex approach to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, increasing the accuracy of the results.
  • Displays historical data: It offers a chronicle of drug use over a timespan, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur greater costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual variances in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite frequently being labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
