Delivering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services throughout Saint John, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in the field. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol testing, we offer specialized hair follicle testing and operate centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body suffices for testing. Hair analyses can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle analysis. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over conventional urine tests to enforce zero-tolerance policies. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle assessments provide up to a 90-day drug detection window, are overseen in a controlled environment, and are nearly foolproof. However, urine testing remains most effective for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a chronological record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer about a 90-day detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easily transportable.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for initial screenings and verifications. For EtG, additional tests, or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to determine the weight of the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of handling a drug test result consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is logged into the laboratory’s system. This process involves ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data requirements absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug involvement in most cases, a positive result necessitates subsequent confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If the Screening indicates a presumptive positive outcome, extra hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than those found in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to hair drug screening being the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, all samples presumed positive are washed as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use over a 90-day span, outlasting the detection range of urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks usage over time: It provides insights into a drug use pattern over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days before drugs are detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Even though often named "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the skin

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
