Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Salkum, Washington. We specialize in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, offering services in cities across the country. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or other body areas are needed. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific analyses.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has become more prevalent for drug screening. Various employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer it over traditional urine testing. This method supports zero-tolerance policies and assists judicial protocols, offering a longer detection span of up to 90 days and is often conducted under supervision, making it highly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, urine tests still hold accuracy for detecting recent drug usage within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands provide an extensive timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the growing fiber. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of nearly three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional factors, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is recommended. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is advised. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. 'Head hair' solely refers to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the primary processing of a sample into a laboratory's workflow. This entails ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial, quick assessment for drug abuse. While it’s a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be sufficient for legal proceedings. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, the drugs are removed from hair at a substantially lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), indicating why hair drug testing is a complex technique to administer.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug testing captures drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a more constrained detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Provides historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug usage over a duration, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-ingestion.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Salkum, WA, hair follicle tests offer a definitive edge over urine tests. Superior detection accuracy is achieved, providing a robust means of identifying substance use. Unlike urine tests, which cover a short timeframe, hair testing gives a historical record of drug usage, proving more reliable for comprehensive assessments.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle testing method employed in Salkum, WA allows for an extended detection window, capturing drug use history for up to 90 days. Employers benefit from this extended period as it provides a more complete overview of an individual's drug-use pattern, aiding in more informed decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
