Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Samish, Washington. Need a drug or alcohol hair test? We specialize in hair analysis and have facilities nationwide, equipped to administer these tests. You'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized purposes.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer them over standard urine tests. These hair tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies and for individuals on probation due to their longer detection period, which can last up to 90 days, through an observed process, making them nearly tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair records a prolonged history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair strand. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it can offer about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch strand sample containing roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, an ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In the case where scalp hair is not available, a comparable volume of body hair can be utilized. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial phase of processing a sample within a laboratory’s system. This entails verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If Screening indicates that a sample is presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are very challenging to falsify, resulting in more accurate findings.
  • Delivers chronological data: It reflects a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand, rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over urine testing in Samish, WA? Hair tests offer superior detection accuracy and are more reliable. While urine tests are standard, hair testing is preferred due to its inability to be easily manipulated. The accuracy of hair samples in showcasing drug use history makes them a preferred choice for comprehensive analysis in occupational and legal scenarios.

Extended Detection Window

Extended detection window is a key feature of hair follicle testing in Samish, WA. Able to trace drug use for up to 90 days, this method offers employers a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance history. The longevity of this detection period surpasses that of traditional methods, allowing for more informed decision-making regarding employment candidates or current staff.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests offer a tamper-resistant approach to drug testing in Samish, WA. The methodology significantly minimizes the risk of sample alteration, providing results that are reliable and unquestionable. This integrity ensures that the samples collected reflect the true status of drug use without external interference, safeguarding the testing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
