For those in San Juan, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Specializing in hair-based testing, we have centers across all cities Nationwide equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a method of choice, often overshadowing urine tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts lean towards hair tests for their precision. The standout advantage is hair tests’ extended detection timeframe, reaching up to 90 days, minimizing the chance of manipulation, whereas urine tests remain optimal for detecting substance use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a crucial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair strand fibers. If collected near the scalp, hair analysis can offer up to a three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. This method is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hairs (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair can't be collected, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome comprises four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the sample's initial entry into a lab’s system. This phase verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a quick preliminary examination for drug abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to determine drug absence in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples with a presumed positive result in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples presumed positive undergo washing prior to necessary confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thus leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Tracks historical usage: It offers a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent use detection: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become traceable within hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically entail higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on analyzing the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
