Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Selleck, Washington. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers across all cities nationwide that conduct these assessments. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or elsewhere on the body can be utilized. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing options.

In recent times, the preference for conducting drug tests has increasingly moved towards the hair follicle method. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now demand hair drug tests over traditional urine ones. Hair follicle tests appeal to zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers. Their main advantage is a longer drug detection span of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making cheating nearly impossible. Yet, for recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have been recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can offer an extended-term record of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can present up to a roughly 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample of about 200 strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable amount of body hair might be gathered. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair. "Body hair" denotes all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab's system. This step verifies that the sample has been properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, cost-effective check for drug abuse on most samples. A positive screen must be verified for legal purposes. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can spot drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Cheat resistance: It's very tough to deceive a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical information: It can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing usually costs more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
