Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses in Sequim, Washington. Whether you need drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analyses and has centers across the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair tests can screen for various substances including drugs and alcohol/ETG.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been chosen over urine tests for substance screening. Both employers, judicials, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer them. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation officers due to their longer detection window, typically extending up to 90 days, and because they are hard to tamper with. However, urine tests remain more precise for identifying recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a robust means for assessing use of substances, hair testing captures long-term data by preserving biomarkers within hair fibers. Hair near the scalp offers a detection window of up to 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. It is convenient to collect, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of around 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests above 10 panels, it is best to have 150mg of the specimen. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair, while body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in lab processing of a test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step checks that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary test for drug abuse. Though it is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result from this requires confirmation for legal admissibility. All samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

When a sample is potentially positive in Screening, extra hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. Drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS for any positive screening. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleaned as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests span up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that cover a shorter period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair test is exceptionally difficult, enhancing accuracy.
  • Tracks usage history: It reveals drug use patterns over time instead of only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Does not indicate recent use: Drugs appear in hair only after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests are usually more costly than other types of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth variations can affect metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", this procedure examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Sequim, WA, hair follicle tests overshadow urine tests regarding accuracy and reliability. The ability to detect drug use over 90 days provides a more profound insight into an individual's substance history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
