Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments throughout South Whidbey, Washington. Whether you require hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise in hair analysis is unmatched, with facilities nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, sourced from the scalp or body. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or various tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence over the traditional methods of urine testing. Many businesses, legal entities, and substance abuse experts now prefer this method. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and parolees can benefit from hair tests. The significant advantage is their capability to trace drug usage for up to 90 days, carried out under direct supervision and nearly tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug consumption within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing offers a comprehensive history of substance use by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand. When samples are collected near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use for approximately a 3-month period. The simplicity of hair collection, its resistance to tampering, and ease of shipment further enhance its utility.

A 1.5-inch hair sample containing approximately 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) and closest to the scalp will provide a 100mg sample, ideal for screening and confirmation. For assessments such as EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advised. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. It is important to note that head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system, ensuring correct sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional information not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse and, while cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, any positive results from this stage require confirmation for court admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further verification.

When a sample screens positive, additional hair is retrieved from the initial specimen for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair in concentrations much lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging methodology.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positive results are washed before confirmation as necessary. The process from Accessioning to Confirmation is meticulously reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, which is longer than the detection window of urine tests.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: Offers a pattern of drug use over time, rather than only detecting recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth patterns can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Even though these tests are commonly termed "hair follicle tests", they actually examine the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In South Whidbey, WA, hair follicle testing emerges as superior when compared to traditional urine tests. Comprehensive Detection allows the identification of substance use over a long period, unlike urine tests that have a much shorter detection window. This enhanced timeframe provides a clear picture of an individual's drug habits, offering an expansive view that urine tests simply cannot match.

Increased Reliability is another critical advantage as hair tests provide constant and unaltered results, unlike urine-based testing methods, which can be vulnerable to alterations. The precision and breadth of the hair testing method cater to the growing demands of industries that enforce strict drug-free policies, thus ensuring a more secure workplace environment.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle testing approach in South Whidbey, WA, boasts an Extended Detection Window, reaching up to 90 days. This capability outshines traditional methods, offering a significant advantage for employers seeking a thorough understanding of an individual's drug history. The extended timeframe that hair holds drug metabolites ensures that test results reflect a substance's presence more extensively than any short-term tests.

With the hair sample's growth capturing any ingestible substances over months, employers receive a more Holistic Insight into the candidate's lifestyle choices and drug use patterns. This detailed projection not only enhances safety within workplaces but also aids in making informed, strategic hiring decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle testing method in South Whidbey, WA, stands out due to its Tamper-Resistant nature, drastically reducing the likelihood of result manipulation. Unlike urine samples that can be adulterated or substituted, hair samples remain unaffected by external tampering, ensuring the integrity of the testing process and reliability of the results obtained.

Employing hair follicle tests brings an Unquestionable Assurance to the testing procedure, where potential substance use is accurately detected without the risk of hidden alterations. This robustness offers peace of mind to employers and legal bodies alike, knowing that the results they are acting upon are both valid and uncontaminated.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
