Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Stevenson, Washington. For those needing a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and provides facilities nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, a 1.5 to 2-inch hair sample from the crown or body is required. These tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be tailored to specific testing needs.

Over the past few years, drug testing procedures increasingly favor hair follicle drug tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals often mandate these tests over standard urine screenings. Hair follicle testing is popular among zero-tolerance policymakers, courts, and probation officers due to its extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days and an observed collection process that is difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to alter, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, consisting of about 200 strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair indicate scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

Lab processing of a drug test consists of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of incorporating a sample into the laboratory's system. It involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any missing data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary inspection for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to dismiss drug use in most samples, positive results require confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening need further confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is obtained from the primary sample and processed for Extraction. In extraction, drugs are separated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most intricate to perform.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are pre-washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can monitor drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter window.
  • Cheating difficulty: Hair drug tests are hard to evade, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage patterns: Displays a timeline of drug use, beyond immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent consumption undetectable: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after usage.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variations: Differences such as hair color and personal hair growth speed may impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
